Found a killer deal on a screwdriver set - is it worth it?

Hey everyone,

Was at a garage sale this morning and picked up a 6-piece screwdriver set from a brand called 'ProGrip' for $12. They look decent, magnetic tips, rubber handles. Haven't used them yet. Any of you heard of ProGrip? Think they'll hold up for occasional furniture assembly and light DIY? Don't want to ruin screws if they strip out.

ProGrip? Never heard of 'em. For $12, you get what you pay for. I've seen too many cheap drivers cam out and strip screw heads. If you're just turning a few screws into IKEA particle board, they might survive. But if you're driving lags or working with hardwoods, toss 'em in the trash. A good set from Wera or Wiha will cost more but last years. My advice: keep 'em as a backup, but don't rely on 'em for anything serious.

ProGrip is a knockoff brand. I only use Snap-on or Craftsman. Those cheap ones will strip the first time you look at them wrong. But hey, if you're just using them for light stuff, they might be okay. I wouldn't trust 'em on a project that matters. Keep an eye on the tips – if they start to round over, pitch 'em.

What matters is the tip fit. Even a cheap driver can work if the tip is machined properly and fits the screw snugly. Check for play – if it wobbles, it'll strip. Also, magnetic tips are nice but can attract metal shavings. For $12, it's a gamble. I'd test them on a few scrap screws first. If they hold up, great. If not, return 'em if you can. But don't expect precision. I'm picky about my drivers – I only use Vessel or PB Swiss. But for a homeowner, they might be fine.
