Need screwdriver advice for building a deck – what do you guys use?

Howdy folks, new here. I'm about to start building a 12x16 deck and realized my old screwdrivers are shot. I've got a mix of flatheads and Phillips but nothing that can handle 3-inch deck screws without stripping. Any recommendations for a good screwdriver set that won't break the bank? I'm not a pro, just a DIYer. Thanks!

Hey Sam, welcome! For deck screws you really want a impact driver, not a screwdriver. But if you're set on manual, get a set with hardened tips. I use a Wera Kraftform and it's been solid. Also, make sure you match the tip to the screw – Phillips #2 for most deck screws. Don't use a flathead, you'll strip the head.

I agree with Mike, but if you're doing a whole deck, get an impact driver. I built my deck last summer with a Makita impact and it was a game changer. For screwdrivers, I like the Milwaukee set with the cushioned grip. But seriously, save your wrists and get a driver. You can thank me later.

Thanks for the tips! I do have an old corded drill but no impact driver. Maybe I'll invest in one. But for now, I'll look into the Wera or Milwaukee sets. Any specific model numbers? Also, what size screwdriver for #8 screws? I think it's a #2 Phillips but want to be sure.

For #8 screws, yes, #2 Phillips is right. For the Wera set, the Kraftform Plus 334/6 is good. Milwaukee has a 48-22-2800 set that's nice too. But seriously, check out the Ryobi impact driver – it's cheap and works great for DIY. I'm an apprentice so I use what the boss has, but at home I have Ryobi.
