DeWalt vs Makita for a new drill/driver?

Hey all, I'm looking at getting a new drill/driver set. I've been a DeWalt guy for years, but my buddy swears by Makita. I do mostly woodworking and some light construction. Weight and torque are important. Anyone have input on the new 20V Max vs XGT? Is Makita worth the extra cash?

I've collected Makita for over a decade. Their XGT line is a beast - way more power and runtime than DeWalt's 20V Max. Yeah, it's pricier, but if you're doing heavy drilling, the brushless motors hold up better. That said, DeWalt's 20V is solid for hobbyists. What kind of projects are you tackling?

Both are good, but I've seen way more DeWalt failures on job sites. I retired with my Makita set still running strong. The key is ergonomics - go hold both in a store. Also, consider battery compatibility: Makita's 18V LXT is still the most common platform out there. Don't sleep on their sub-compact line either.

Good points. I've got some old DeWalt 18V stuff that I'm replacing. Mostly building furniture and decks, so nothing insane. The price difference is real - I can get a DeWalt 20V Max set with two batteries for what a single Makita XGT battery costs. But I don't want to regret going cheap.

If you're sticking with cordless, think about the ecosystem. Do you plan to expand into other tools? Makita has way more options in the 18V line - routers, planers, even vacuums. DeWalt is catching up but still lacks some specialty tools. For furniture building, a good circ saw is a must - check their track saw options.
