Hey guys, total noob question here but I'm installing some corrugated metal roofing on my shed and yesterday I was using my circular saw with a metal cutting blade to trim a sheet. The thing bucked on me and I almost took my thumb off. Scared the crap out of me. What's the safe way to do this? Should I be using different tools? Any tips to avoid turning this into a trip to the ER?

OP, you're lucky you still have all your digits. Never use a circular saw freehand on thin metal like that - it'll grab and kick back every time. For roofing sheets, I always use tin snips or electric shears. If you gotta make long straight cuts, clamp the sheet down between two boards and use a jigsaw with a fine metal blade. And for god's sake wear gloves and safety glasses - metal shavings are no joke.

Dan's right about the clamping. Also make sure you're supporting the entire sheet so it doesn't vibrate. I've seen guys use sawhorses with plywood on top. If you're doing a lot of cuts, invest in a nibbler attachment for your drill - cleaner cuts and way safer. And mark your cut line with a sharpie, not pencil - it's easier to see.

LOL another DIY warrior learning the hard way! Seriously though, I cut this stuff every day. Here's my pro tip: score your cut line first with a utility knife (wear cut-resistant gloves!). Then use aviation snips - red for left curves, green for right, yellow for straight. Goes through like butter and zero kickback. And clean up those sharp edges with a file afterward unless you want to explain to your doc how you got that sweet new scar.
