Building a Deck: What Wrench Set Should I Get?

Hey everyone! I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard next month. I have a basic tool set but I need to invest in some good wrenches. What kind of wrench set would you recommend for a project like this? I'll be dealing with carriage bolts, lag screws, and maybe some other fasteners. Budget is around $150. Thanks in advance!

I'd suggest a good combination wrench set, like 8-19mm or 5/16" to 3/4". Also, consider a ratcheting wrench set, they speed things up. Also, get a socket set with a ratchet for those hard-to-reach spots. For deck screws, you might use a drill with nutsetter bits, but for lag bolts, you'll want a socket. I'd also invest in a torque wrench if you're tightening anything critical, but for a deck, maybe not necessary. Just don't cheap out! You'll regret it.

Dave, I built my shed last year and went through the same thing. I got a DeWalt 20-pc combination wrench set on sale, and they've been great. But honestly, for a deck, you'll use sockets more than wrenches for those hex lag bolts. I'd recommend a good 3/8" drive socket set, like a 50-pc set from Husky or Pittsburgh (if you're near a Harbor Freight). They're cheap and surprisingly good.
