Hey everyone, I’m about to pull the trigger on a new 1/2” impact wrench for automotive work. I’ve got some DeWalt 20V tools already, but I hear Makita’s XWT08Z is a beast. Is the extra torque worth switching platforms? I do mostly lug nuts and suspension bolts. Any real-world experience?

I've used both! The Makita definitely has more nut-busting torque, but it’s also heavier. DeWalt’s DCF899 is no slouch though, and if you already have batteries, stick with yellow. The difference in power won’t matter for most DIY jobs. My DeWalt has never let me down on my F-150.

As a pro, I run Makita for impact wrenches. The XWT08Z has never left me stranded on a rusted bolt. But if you’re just a weekend warrior, the DeWalt is fine. One thing though: Makita’s trigger response is smoother. Test ‘em in person if you can. Also, consider the new high-torque from DeWalt (DCF961) – it’s close.

Good points. I saw the DCF961 – it’s pricey though. Maybe I’ll grab the Makita since I can get a bare tool for cheap. Thanks for the input!
