DeWalt vs Makita Impact Wrenches: Which One's Worth the Cash?

Hey folks, I'm in the market for a new 1/2-inch impact wrench. I've been eyeing the DeWalt DCF899 and the Makita XWT08Z. Both look solid on paper, but I'm torn. I mostly do DIY stuff around the house and some light automotive work. Anyone here have experience with either? Which one holds up better under real use? Appreciate any input!

Larry, I've been in the restoration game for over 20 years, and I've probably burned through more impacts than I care to admit. DeWalt's DCF899 is a beast, no doubt. I've used one to break loose lug nuts that haven't moved since the Nixon administration. But the Makita's got that featherlight feel and a bit more control for finesse work. If you're mostly doing DIY, I'd lean Makita – it's easier on the wrists. But if you're doing heavy mechanic stuff day in, day out, DeWalt's torque is hard to beat. Just my two cents.

I gotta back up Hank on this one. I'm a plumber so I'm not beating on lug nuts all day, but I do use my impact on rusted pipe fittings and such. I've got both the DCF899 and the Makita XWT08Z in my collection (I might have a problem, lol). The DeWalt definitely hits harder, but it's heavier and more unwieldy in tight spots. The Makita is more compact and has that triple hammer mechanism that gives a smoother output. Plus, the forward/reverse switch is less fiddly. For home use, I'd actually suggest the Makita – it's just more versatile. But if you're planning on going big, you can't go wrong with the DeWalt.

Battery life, huh? Well, DeWalt's 20V Max batteries are pretty solid, but Makita's 18V LXT line has been around forever and they've got a ton of options. If you're already invested in DeWalt, that might be a deciding factor. But don't forget that Makita bundles often come with a charger and two batteries, which softens the blow. I've seen some sweet deals on the XWT08Z kit. And honestly, those 5Ah batteries last a long time. I've done a full day of work on a single charge with mine. So it's a wash, really. Just go with what makes sense for your wallet and your existing lineup.
