Harley tool kits - still a thing or just a memory?

Read this article today and it got me thinking. For decades, Harleys came with a tool kit tucked under the seat. I remember my dad's old Shovelhead had one with just the essentials. Now it seems they might not include them anymore? What do you all think? Is it a cost-cutting move or just practical since so many people don't work on their own bikes?

Honestly, I never understood why they included them in the first place. Most people who ride Harleys nowadays either take them to a shop or have a trailer. But for those of us who like to wrench, a factory kit is mostly useless - just cheap wrenches and a spark plug socket. I'd rather they knock a few bucks off the price and let me buy my own quality tools.

I'm with DIYDave on this. My friend has a 2018 Street Bob and the kit is a joke. It's got some basic allen keys and a crappy screwdriver. But I also kind of like the nostalgia. It's like a tradition. But if they're going to cut it, they should at least include a decent multi-tool that fits modern fasteners. I mean, who carries a tool roll anymore?

I've been a Harley tech for 15 years. The tool kits started disappearing around 2015 when they went to the 'precision cooled' engines. They knew people wouldn't be working on them as much. But honestly, if you're on a long ride and something comes loose, a basic kit can save you. I've used mine to tighten a mirror or a clutch cable adjuster. I'd say it's a shame to lose them, but I guess they're targeting a different buyer now.

ContractorCarl makes a good point about the adjuster. But even then, you can carry a small leatherman in your pocket. I still say give me the cash discount. Or at least offer the tool kit as an optional accessory for us old schoolers. But I bet the average new Harley buyer doesn't even know what a wrench is for. Haha.
