My Impact Wrench Just Stopped Charging - Any Ideas?

Hey folks, so my trusty 20V impact wrench (about 2 years old) just stopped charging. I plug it in, the charger light stays green (which I think means fully charged?), but the battery is dead as a doornail. It won't even spin for a second. Anyone else had this issue? Is it the battery or the tool? Thanks!

Chris, I had a similar problem with a drill once. Turned out the battery contacts were all gunked up. Try cleaning the terminals on the battery and the tool with a bit of rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. Also, make sure the charger is actually working - test it on another battery if you have one. Sometimes the charger goes bad too.

Good points, Hank. But if the charger shows green, it might be a bad cell in the battery pack. I've seen that happen a lot with those 20V Max. If you're handy, you can open the pack and check the voltage on each cell with a multimeter. If one is really low (like 0V), that's your problem. Replacement cells are cheap, but if you're not comfortable, a new battery is about $50. Also, check for any swollen battery - that's a sign it's toast.

Don't go buyin' a new battery right away! I'm on a budget, so I've learned the cheap way: try freezing the battery overnight. I know it sounds crazy, but it sometimes revives a dead cell. Put it in a ziplock bag, freeze it for 12 hours, then let it warm up to room temp before charging. Worked for me once on a drill battery. YMMV, but worth a shot before spending cash.
