Scored a 5-piece GearWrench ratcheting set for $40 at HD - too good to be true?

Hey all, long time lurker first time poster. Was at Home Depot today and they had a 5-piece GearWrench ratcheting wrench set (metric, 8-19mm) on clearance for $40. Normally like $80-90. I grabbed it without thinking but now I'm second guessing. Are these any good for a weekend warrior? I mostly do basic car maintenance and around the house stuff. Also did I just get lucky or is there a catch? They look fine but idk. Thanks!

GearWrench is decent for the price, especially at $40. The ratcheting mechanism is smooth enough for most tasks, but don't expect Snap-on precision. I've had a set for 3 years and the only issue is the selector switch can get gummed up if you don't keep them clean. For weekend warrior use, you're fine. Just don't use them as breaker bars. Also check that the sizes are stamped clearly - sometimes the laser etching wears off. If you got the ones with the surface drive, even better.

Before you even think about using those, make sure you're wearing safety glasses. Ratcheting wrenches can slip and bust your knuckles if you're not careful. Also, that price is suspiciously low - check the package for any missing pieces or if they're returns. If they're new in box, great deal. But I've seen people buy clearance tools only to find out they're missing the 10mm (always the 10mm). Also, don't use them on rounded bolts, that's how you strip stuff. Stay safe.

Nice find! I've got a similar set and they're handy for furniture assembly and light engine work. But for woodworking, I rarely use them. If you're doing any DIY around the house, they'll come in clutch. One tip: lubricate the ratchet mechanism with a drop of oil every few months. And yeah, the 10mm will disappear, so keep an eye on it lol.
